Sammy Ray Mathis, 60, passed away Friday, January 6, 2017, at NMMC in Tupelo, MS. He is from Alcorn County, Walnut, MS. His funeral service will be Sunday, January 8, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. at Magnolia Funeral Home Chapel of Memories. Bro. Joe Spencer and Bro. John Boler will officiate the service. Visitation will be on Saturday, January 7, 2017, from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and on Sunday, January 8, 2017, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. at Magnolia Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church Cemetery. Mr. Mathis was born in Ripley, MS on December 5, 1956 to the late Mr. D.C. "Duke" Mathis and Mrs. Pauline Rogers Mathis. He was a Farmer and Business Owner. Mr. Mathis was of the Baptist Faith and a member of Holly Baptist Church. He loved being with and talking with his family. He especially loved his grandchildren, and enjoyed dirt track racing. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Brenda Taylor Mathis of Walnut, his son, Benjamin Tyler Mathis and wife Haley of Grenada, MS, Tanner Brooks, who was like a son to him; daughter, Rachel McNutt of Walnut, and two grandchildren, Alyson Wilson and River Huggins, brother, Danny Mathis and wife Evelyn of Walnut, sisters, Judy Hines of Brandon, MS and Betty Ann Spencer and husband Bro. Joe of Walnut, other relatives and a host of friends. Pallbearers will be Stanley Nelms, Danny Crum, Ricky Morphis, Ronnie Morphis, Carl McClure, Tanner Brooks, Shawn Brooks, and Benny Jones. Honorary Pallbearers will be Greg Rowland, Ronnie Teague, Charles Lanier, and R.L. Mathis. He was preceded in death by his father, Mr. D.C. "Duke" Mathis and his mother, Mrs. Pauline Rogers Mathis.
