Johnny Wayne Mathis was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, August 13, 2018. He was born September 22, 1944 to the late John Ottie and Lucile Green Mathis.
Johnny graduated from Kossuth High School in 1964 and later attended Northeast Community College where he drove a bus for the college.
He married the love of his life and best friend, Olivia Lucinda Holley in 1971 who is a retired teacher from Kossuth Elementary. She fell in love with his love for others, sense of humor and slight of hand card tricks. The two enjoyed spending time together wherever the road took them.
Johnny started his career at ITT, Corinth in 1968 and worked until 1985. He worked on the die casting and molding line, expediting department, and as a security guard. He also had a long career in the embroidery and silkscreen t-shirt and cap industry from the mid 1980’s until present. He was the owner of Alcorn Graphics, Rainbow Graphics, Tri-Star Graphics, and Johnny’s Specialty Shop. His career in this industry spanned over 30 years. He also worked for the Alcorn County 5th District and Magic Valley Screen Printing in Henderson, TN.
Johnny was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish with his grandchildren, family and friends. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited and enjoyed attending and cooking for the Annual Alcorn County Wildlife Tasting Supper. Through the years he also loved to play golf, basketball, softball, and tennis. He showed his love to his family by supporting his children and grandchildren in every endeavor they were a part off including sports and band. He loved to laugh and to make everyone feel loved, especially with his giving heart and selfless actions. He enjoyed entertaining others through his jokes and magic tricks. Johnny had a love for farming and enjoyed working with his cattle.
Johnny was a follower and a lover of Christ and had a deep desire to tell others about Him through his Christian t-shirt ministry. He loved his church, County Line Baptist Church, Walnut, MS, where he served on various committees, was a part of the men’s brotherhood, and worked to help receive donations for the Alcorn Baptist Bread of Life Food Bank
Johnny was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Will and Cora Russell Green, paternal grandparents Charlie and Minnie Wilbanks Mathis, his parents John Ottie and Lucille Green Mathis, his brother Arthur Mathis, his father-in-law and mother-in-law Charles Brantley and Ruby Payne Holley, his brother-in-law Joe Morphis, and his infant son Benjamin Jacob Mathis.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years Olivia Holley Mathis, two sons John Luke and daughter in love Andrea of Booneville and Mark Paul and daugher in love Misty of New Albany, 5 grandchildren that he adored: Jourdan, Conner, Chandler, Casen, and Marlee Mathis, sisters Minnie Nelson (Bill) and Onetter Morphis, sisters-in-law Louise Meeks Mathis and Marilyn Holley Narowetz (Louis), brothers-in-law Morris Holley (Linda), Marvin Holley (Linda), Craig Holley, Roger Holley (Lynn), and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins that he loved dearly.
Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Wednesday, August 15 at Magnolia Funeral Home, Corinth, Mississippi and will continue from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Thursday, August 16, at County Line Baptist Church, Walnut, MS. A Celebration of Life will be at 4:00 pm on Thursday, August 16, 2018, at County Line Baptist Church with Dr. David Shepherd and Bro. Scott Rogers officiating. Burial will be in County Line Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Drewery, Billy Hodum, Jay Jones, Danny Mathis, Rickey Morphis, Ronnie Morphis, Donnie Prince, J. L. Settlemires, David Wood, and Ray Wooten. Honorary Pallbearers will be Larry Crum, Bud Heath, Laroyce Jones, Randy Mathis, Stanley Nelms, Bill Nelson, Gabriel Null, Tim Wygul and Tony Hopkins.
