John Brewer Tomlinson Jr, born on June 24, 1943, in Kossuth, to John Brewer Tomlinson Sr and Mildred Hughes Tomlinson, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday morning. John was a proud graduate of Kossuth High School, where he served as a two-year class president, was named Mr. KHS, captained the football team, played basketball, and earned the affectionate nickname ‘Bookie’ from his friends and teachers as he excelled in math and always kept his head in the books.
John's academic journey continued at Northeast Mississippi Junior College, where he earned the title of Mr. NEMJC, class president, and named to the Hall of Fame. Then at Mississippi State University, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Accountancy, his Masters of Business Administration, and served as Treasurer of Phi Alpha Tau. His passion for teaching led him back to NEMJC, where he taught accounting and met the love of his life, Carolyn. They married in May of 1969 and began a beautiful journey together of over 55 years, raising their sons Trey, John John, and Ben.
In the late 1960s, John founded Tomlinson Tractor Co. and later pursued a long and distinguished career in accounting, working for various businesses, including the paper mill in Counce, Tenneco Oil Refinery in Louisiana, Moore & Gray CPA Firm, and ultimately establishing his own practice, Tomlinson Accounting & Computers, in 1986. He also founded and owned Crossroads Outdoor, Inc.
John served as a member of the Corinth school board from 1976 - 1982. And in 1987, he was one of three individuals instrumental in starting the soccer program at Corinth High School.
Although he himself was not in good health, he was an unwavering caregiver to his wife until her passing four months ago. John was a doting grandfather, enjoyed yardwork, crossword puzzles, and watching old black and white films, especially westerns. He was a faithful member of Gaines Chapel Methodist Church, generously giving his time, knowledge, and prayers to the church and congregation. Driven by his heart of gold, John’s life was a testament to his faith, love, and commitment to helping others, often doing more for them than he would for himself.
Survivors include his three sons, Trey Tomlinson (Tricia), John John Tomlinson (Mary Ellen) and Ben Tomlinson; seven grandchildren, Anna Kate Tomlinson, Abby Tomlinson, Alden Tomlinson, Hughes Tomlinson, Mandy Rowsey, Drew Rowsey and John William Tomlinson; special nephews, Beau Tomlinson and Bobby Rodgers; and his beloved dog, Missy. John was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Tomlinson; father, John B Tomlinson Sr.; mother, Laura Mildred Tomlinson; brother, Paul Walker Tomlinson; sister, Judy Cooper; and his beloved dog, Mozart.
