He served in the US National Air Guard for six years, and was a member of Alcorn County Electrical Review Board. He also served on the Alcorn Library Commission, served three terms as the President of Corinth Alcorn County Home Builders Association and served as Building Inspector for the City of Corinth. Jim was one of the founders of Magnolia Funeral Home in Corinth, MS.
