Ely Barbour Mitchell was born on December 2, 1939 and lived a full life for 85 years; passing away on Tuesday, February 18, 2025. Ely’s parents were Lyman Burge and Cornelia Ann Barbour Mitchell. He lived the majority of his life on Mitchell Hill on the land his great grandfather purchased from the Chickasaw Indians. Ely attended Biggersville High School where he was active in FFA, basketball and baseball. That is where he met his wife, Jane Savage. He graduated from Biggersville High School in 1960, and they were married on December 23, 1960. Ely worked for a while for the Highway Department after school, then moved for a brief period to St. Charles, MO where he also worked for the highway department. Their daughter Tricey was born while they lived there. In 1967 they packed up and moved back home where Ely had a dream to begin farming full-time. Shortly after that their son Tim was born and the farming legacy began. Ely loved farming and had his children working on the farm at a young age. In his spare time, Ely decided to dabble in politics and in 1988 was elected as supervisor. He served Alcorn County until 2008. During his 20 years of service, he was very active in helping to grow industry and was always working hard with the taxpayer in mind. Once Ely retired, he remained active on the farm. His joy was seeing his grandchildren, Logan & Dalton, working on the farm with him. He was especially thrilled when Logan returned home from MSU to work full time on the farm to continue the family legacy. Ely had a long full life and touched many people during his time here. We are thankful for the wonderful memories and the time we had with him. Ely leaves behind his daughter, Tricey Mitchell; his son, Tim Mitchell (Stacey); his grandchildren, Logan Mitchell (Olivia) and Dalton Mitchell (Lilly); his nurse, Renea Johnson, who he loved dearly; other relatives and a host of friends. He is preceded in death by his wife, Jane Savage Mitchell; an infant son; his brother, Lyman Burge Mitchell Jr.; and his sister, Margaret Mitchell. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate a contribution in his memory to Pinevale Children’s Home (1872 CR 700 Corinth, MS 38834). Magnolia Funeral Home has been honored to serve the family of Mr. Ely Mitchell.
