Doug Mitchell

Doug Mitchell, 51, passed away Sunday, July 31, 2016 in Kossuth, MS. For those who knew Doug, his passions in life were evident: his love for his Lord, his love for his family and his love for agriculture. Doug epitomized a servant’s heart, as was evident by his tireless work within his church and community. Just a look around Kossuth Baptist Church shows many examples of Doug’s work and dedication to building the Kingdom of God. Doug, alongside his own dad, has kept the nursery at Kossuth Baptist Church for over 20 years, long enough for kids of church kids to be lovingly cared for. Anyone who knew Doug quickly realized they could call him for anything at any time, and he would drop everything to help. Doug had a huge heart and an amazing love for children, especially his 2 grandchildren, Madi Grace and Aiden Kyle (or AK 47, as Doug liked to call him). With a contagious smile and laugh, Doug was an amazing uncle to all of his nieces and nephews, giving each of them a pet nickname, and always taking the time to joke around with them. As an older brother to his two sisters, Doug was always willing to sacrifice for their benefit. With a strong work ethic, Doug worked exceedingly long hours in order to provide for his family but he never complained. Doug loved farming and often said he was fortunate enough to have a life that he loved. He and his father built their farm side-by-side. Although Doug had a successful farming operation, he remained humble and never turned his back on anyone in need. He was continually looking for ways to strengthen and diversify the farm to ensure it was productive and provided opportunities for Doug to work alongside his two sons, Mack and D.K. Everything was done with the hopes of leaving it better for the upcoming generations. The mold was broken when God created Doug Mitchell, and there will never be anyone as special as him. Luke 10:2 says; “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.” Doug will be greatly missed by a multitude of family and friends; however, we take comfort in knowing that Jesus has called his worker home. Doug was involved in the following organizations: North American Grain Export Board, Farm Bureau Board of Directors, Alcorn County Co-oP Board of Directors, Kossuth Baptist Church Deacon and Nursery Sunday School Teacher, Mississippi Hereford Breeder’s Association, Mississippi Cattlemen’s Association, Mississippi Soybean Growers Association, 1979-1982 Kossuth High School FFA President, 1992 Mississippi Young Farmer & Rancher Award. Doug is survived by: his wife of 27 years, Tracy Mitchell; daughters: Katie Stanford (Landon) and Sarah Mitchell; sons: Gary Mack Mitchell (fiancée Hannah Parks) and Douglas Kyle Mitchell (Brooke); parents: Gary D. and Linda Dellinger Mitchell; sisters: Amy Gillmore (Brad) and Mary Ellen Tomlinson (John); grandchildren: Madi Grace Stanford and Aiden Kyle Mitchell; nieces: Hannah Gillmore, Mandy Rowsey and Meredith Gillmore; nephews: Hughes Tomlinson, Drew Rowsey and Gabriel Gillmore. Doug was preceded in death by: Grandchildren, Job Farrow Stanford and Noah Mitchell Stanford; paternal grandparents: Lionel and Letha Mitchell and maternal grandparents: Dewey and Pauline Dellinger. Visitation is scheduled on Tuesday, August 2, from 5-9 p.m. and from 1 p.m. until the service time, Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at Kossuth Baptist Church. A celebration of Doug's life is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at Kossuth Baptist Church officiated by Bro. Keith Fields and Bro. Ray Newcomb. Interment will follow in Mitchell Family Cemetery. Pallbearers include Steve Wilbanks, Brad Mitchell, Jose' Ruiz, Ray Flores, Tracy Essary, John Rhodes and Bobby Deaton.
